Kotilingeshwara , Temple of 1 crore Shiva Lingas !

Are you a devotee of  Lord Shiva ? Imagine a Shiva Linga of height 33mtr ,,, What a site it is !! and if a Nandi of height 11 mtrs is opposite to that massive shiva Linga,,, Feeling overwhelmed !! No the speculation does not end here, There is something more interesting than this,, know you imagine One crore smaller sized Shiva Lingas surrounding the huge Shiva Lingam and Bulky Nandi.. Just hold all your imaginations, This is a real thing and I am talking about Kotilingeshwara temple. 

I know you are excited to know about the Kotilingeshwara temple, Kotilingeshwara temple is located in a area of 13 acres, and the project of installing one crore shiva lingas was started way back in 1980 and till know 90 lakhs lingas are installed and one more interesting thing is this lingas are installed by devotees. 


This is an amazing sight to see, when we think about how this idea of letting devotees installing the Lingas came into existence, whose idea is this ? This is the idea of God Rama !! Don't you believe? It is believed that Lingam in Rameswaram temple was installed by Lord Rama during the war with Ravana. So similarly the idea was borrowed from Lord Rama. A interesting HISTORY of Kotilingeshwara temple what do you say !

Want to know where this Kotilingeshwara temple is located? Yeah I know you are curious to know this. Before that let me say few more interesting things about kotilingeshwara temple.
  1. Shiva Linga at Kotilingeshwara temple is the tallest of its kind in the world, 33metres / 108 feet height.
  2. Kotilingeshwara temple is spread over an area of 15 acres with 90 lakh small shiva lingas installed by devotees.
  3. Nandi of height 11 metres is an amazing sight to see.
  4. poojas are performed to all the installed shiva lingas (90 lakhs) by 10 priests, Surprising!
  5. Every year on Mahashivaratri 2lakh devotees visit Kotilingeshwara temple. 
  6. There are Kolar Gold Fields about 5 km from the kotilingeshwara temple.




Let me not delay it more I will tell you where is the temple. Kotilingeshwara temple is in Kammasandra village, Kolar district, Karnataka - India. Temple is open from 7 am to 9:30 pm. Devotees can offer special pooja (installing of linga on your name, yes your name will be carved and will remain permanent) Devotees who donate Rs 4000 or more are allowed to install lingam. 

Small lingas cost Rs 4000 and Big lingas cost Rs 12000, These lingas are sold in the temple only. (Do not bring lingas  )

How to reach Kotilingeshwara Temple?
  • Reach Bangalore , From Bangalore it is 100 km away.
  • You may hire a taxi from Bangalore or else reach bangarpet railway station by train (71 km from Bangalore) 
  • You may hire a auto from Bangarapet to kotilingeshwara temple (6-7 kms) , Auto person charges Rs 150 for dropping and Rs 250 for to and fro. 
One important thing to keep in mind is that there are no restaurants in around the temple, For food you need to go to Bangarpet which is 7 kms away, so do make necessary arrangements for food and stuff (particularly when you are with kids.

yeah it happens that we ignore the places which are nearer to us. I also rarely visit simhachalam in visakhapatnam which is very much famous

This is so interesting and beautiful. I would definately love to visit this temple. I have not been to south yet but it is so much on my list. Thanks for such a nice ppost and nice pics.

Thank you Yamini, infact I was gathering information regarding kotilingeshwara temple , it took me 2 weeks to get all the info required.
