Nokia Asha 305 vs. Samsung Galaxy Y Duos

When it comes to buying a new phone in entry-level price range, Indian consumers seem to rely mostly only on two companies. One is Nokia and the other one is Samsung as the former is famous for its durability and battery life while the latter for is famous the features of its devices. With each passing day, Samsung is expanding its line with innovative smart phones to offer and Nokia is kind of in a rut. It is not giving up though. 

The Asha phones we've reviewed so far have not let us down in anyway, especially if you consider their very affordable price points. To compete with Asha 305, we have Samsung’s very famous Galaxy Y Duos. At the Asha 305 price point, expectation of Android is out of reach, but if you need a smartphone this phone has ability to install popular applications and games. The Samsung Galaxy Y Duos is the cheapest Dual SIM option there from an international brand. Let’s see which one fares out to be a better one between both of them.

Design

The Nokia Asha 305 has a neat curved back made up of glossy plastic which is prone to scratches and it has a glossy front with faux metal accents. With Asha’s price tag it is not fair to expect more from it. This touchscreen phone is 12.8 mm and weighs around 98g on the other hand; Samsung Galaxy Duos is heavier as well as thicker at 109g and 11.95mm respectively. The styling of this phone is very similar to all the Android based Samsung smartphones in entry-level and while not extremely attractive, the device looks very durable.

Display

The display of Asha 305 is not so bright and there’s no brightness setting whatsoever. Courtesy to the resistive touch screen, the phone doesn’t impress in the touchscreen sensitivity and accuracy. The display on this phone is 3 inch with a resolution of 240 X 400 pixels with a pixel density of 155 ppi. Galaxy Y duos fares better in the screen arena. It has capacitive, multi touchscreen of 3.14 inches with a resolution of 200 X 320 pixels which has a pixel density of 127 ppi and the screen brightness is better compared to Asha 305.

Camera

The Nokia Asha 305 has a 2MP fixed-focus camera that produces photos that turn out to be average and the video recording is done at the 176x144 resolution at 10fps which is not great at all. To talk about Galaxy Y Duos, it has a fixed-focus 3MP camera which clicks decent pictures and it even records videos in QVGA resolution, whose clarity is much better than Nokia Asha 305.

Software and Applications 

The Asha 305 had tried to counter the feature-phone tag with a big surprise in the form of a brand new Series 40 interface inspired by smartphones. It is not exactly like a feature phone and neither can it be considered as well turned-out as a smartphone but is very simple and user friendly. The Symbian-like icons and the home screen swipes add all the more charm to an impressive user interface. There are plenty of apps and games there, a lot of them free. They are still behind the big players in the app store game, but for a feature phone having an app store at all is a major lift. . Another thing worth mentioning is the gift of 40 EA games that come for free when you get this Nokia device. You just need to register on the app catalog to get them and enjoy the basic versions. It doesn’t have a GPS but Nokia Maps can use Cell-ID to get your approximate location.

The Samsung Galaxy Y Duos is an entry level android phone so coming with a Gingerbread 2.3.6 version is pretty understandable. Samsung’s very own TouchWiz launcher is a treat for the users. The Galaxy Y Duos is equipped with all the necessary apps. It comes with a Polaris Office View preinstalled. The app can open Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents and view PDFs too. Google Maps is the app of choice for all things location and offers the latest touch optimizations. 

Processor

Asha 305 is powered by single core 1 GHz processor with 32 MB RAM and 64 MB ROM. The internal memory is 10 MB which is expandable up to 32 GB with a micro SD card. On the other hand, The Samsung Galaxy Y Duos relies on a 832MHz processor which is architecturally better than the one used in Asha 305. It also has 290MB of RAM and 512 MB ROM while the internal storage is 160 MB which can be expandable up to 32 GB. To say, Galaxy Y is much faster than Nokia Asha 305.

Connectivity

The Nokia Asha 305 is a dual band GSM device and offers EDGE as well as GPRS. There's no 3G (HSDPA) or Wi-Fi on board and so is Bluetooth 2.1. For both data connection and charging, it uses a micro USB port. And finally, there's the standard 3.5mm audio jack. 

The Samsung Galaxy Y Duos has a quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dual-band 3G with HSDPA download rates of up to 7.2 Mbps for both its SIM cards. The connectivity package also offers Wi-Fi (b/g/n), Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP support, USB v2.0 and a standard 3.5mm audio port for calls and listening to music using headset/headphones. The battery life of both the phones is decent but as usual Nokia fares better in this department with a battery life.

The Nokia Asha 305 price in India is Rs. 4,360 and has impressive S40 interface Nokia Asha and has been placed exceptionally well but it is obvious that an Android phone like Samsung Galaxy Y Duos costing almost double, Rs. 7899, will have better features.
