Makar sankranthi is celebrated all over India, grandly in Andhrapradesh, Tamilnadu and Uttarpradesh, makar sankranthi is celebrated as a harvest festival, makar sankranhti means tansition of sun into Makhar raashi (capricorn) and even regarded as the most auspicious ocassion, where in most of the hindus start all new and major works too.
the festival is celebrated with different names all over India like pongal in tamil nadu, Uttarayan in gujarath and rajasthan, Maghi in Punjab, haryana & himachal pradesh and makara vilakku in kerala.
