Can I travel by Air in first trimester of my pregnancy
Irrespective of what your mother and friends may tell you, it's not at all true that you can't travel during your four months of pregnancy. However, if there are no pregnancy complications, traveling by any mode should be fine.
In fact, enjoy your trip!
When I got to know of my pregnancy, I was in my home town and had to travel to my husband’s place. The tickets were booked well in advance. My doctor advised me to complete my first 3 months and then travel alone or travel with a companion but with good care.
Some Airlines do not allow 4 months pregnant woman to travel
You can travel during your four months of pregnancy but with some precautions. If there is an issue with amniotic fluid like polydramnios or oligohydramnos, you should not travel. You will come across many airlines that will not allow women to travel when they are four months pregnant. It therefore becomes necessary for you to check out the rules from your airline before you book your ticket. If due to some emergency you do have to travel, make sure you follow the following safety tips:
- If you take proper precautions and are armed with the proper information on when to travel, travel insurance and vaccinations, then you can easily travel during your four months of pregnancy.
- Wherever you go, it becomes necessary for you to inquire about the health care facilities that are available at your destination just in case you need some urgent medical attention.
- You should also carry your medical records with you so that you can provide the same to the doctors with the relevant information if necessary.
- You should also take few extra items that can keep you engaged like earphones and music, magazines etc. which can make your journey more enjoyable.
- You should always carry bottled water with you. If you are worried with regards to the airport security, try to leave a bit earlier and bring some extra money to stop by an airport vendor and purchase some bottled water before boarding your flight. Dehydration can result in many problems for a pregnant woman during travel which can be easily avoided. So drink up!
- It’s a good idea to bring some healthful snacks if food is not available or is unappealing. You can carry with you some packets of whole grain crackers, a low-fat cheese stick and even an energy bar all of which might make all the difference. Remember, Fruits are your best friends in this crucial phase of life.
- You can also pack ear plugs and eye covers so that you can take some rest during the trip. Bring your favourite pillow. If you bring with a travel-sized blanket, it can help you to be more comfortable during a long drive or flight.
- Breath mints, antacids or gum, moist wipes and a waterproof bandage, a toothbrush and toothpaste, motion sickness bag can come in handy if you have nausea.
If your doctor advises you not to travel, then you will be better off by following your doctor’s advice. You are recommended to put off the trip for some other time after the baby is born. You should not risk your health and the health of your unborn child!
If you still have to travel as travelling can provide some respite from the boredom at home or an emergency situation, follow the above mentioned suggestions, you should have a pleasant and healthy trip.
