For example: if you are a regular swimmer, then avoid wearing your name necklace while swimming as the chlorine and other chemical substances present in the water can reduce the natural sheen from it. Chlorine is present in high quantity in the swimming pool and can affect the color of your jewelry.

Some regular chemical combinations can be harsh on gold and silver such as cleaning products. Also, remove your necklace while bathing, cleaning, applying moisturizers, hair sprays or even deodorants.
